Miriam Greenspan, M.Ed., LMHC, is a psychotherapist in private practice,
consultant, writer, and internationally known workshop leader. A pioneer in
women's psychology and psychotherapy, her first book, A New Approach to
Women and Therapy, helped define the field. For the past two decades, her
work has focused on emotional healing for those challenged with severe
trauma and loss. Challenging current clinical and cultural trends which
pathologize "negative" emotions, she teaches how honoring our grief, fear,
and despair can lead to profound transformation on the personal and social
levels.
Ms. Greenspan's book, Healing Through the Dark Emotions: the Wisdom
of Grief, Fear, and Despair (Shambhala, 2003), a Boston Globe bestseller,
won the 2004 Nautilus Book Award in psychology and was chosen as one of the
best spiritual books of 2003 by Spirituality and Health Magazine. Ms.
Greenspan's work has been featured in numerous magazines, including Body
and Soul, Shambhala Sun, Ms., New Woman, Utne Reader, Tikkun, Psychotherapy
Networker, and Spirituality & Health.
Miriam lives in Boston with her
husband, Roger, and two daughters, Anna and Esther. Esther is 19 years old
and was born with multiple disabilities.
This evening's talk and conversation is third of a series of four. How do
we, as parents of children with disabilities, cope with the dark emotions
that arise? Our specific focus will be on chronic grief, fear, despair, and
anger. How do we turn grief to gratitude, fear to joy, despair to faith,
and anger to courage? Miriam will facilitate this conversation with a goal
of creating an ongoing parent support group for those who wish to do so.

Many young people derive confidence and fulfillment through their
experiences in the work force. This workshop will help youth at the
Transition age as they prepare for various employment opportunities, and
will also help them to develop helpful job readiness skills. In order to
ensure individualized attention, the workshop will be limited to 5
participants only.
Speaker Katie Zachary has worked in social services for five years, and is
currently an Employment Specialist at JVS, assisting young people who have
disabilities to find employment. She has coordinated the Youth Ability
program, (which worked with young adults to help them find volunteer
placement in their communities), and worked with the Living, Learning, and
Leading program, (which assisted young adults in finding volunteer
opportunities, and then using these placements later as stepping stones to
finding employment within the community).
