Yesodot Calendar January 2005

01/17 Transition to Adulthood Workshop:  Work is More Than Just a Job

Will my son be ready for work when he leaves school? Does he need a vocational assessment? What is "job carving"? I'm not sure if my daughter could work-are there options in addition to a day program? Where can my daughter learn the social skills she needs in the workplace? When should we begin planning for all of this?

A recent Boston Globe Op-Ed piece, states that "The Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted 14 years ago, but work-force participation by people with disabilities remains low.....People with disabilities typically have trouble finding work even when interest in working is high."

01/17 Adaptive Skiing on Martin Luther King Day

Special Event for paid up family members. Hit the slopes! Join Yesodot for our third annual Martin Luther King Day adaptive ski event at Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. For adaptive skiers who are mobile and can walk independently, there will be a choice of adaptive skiing or adaptive snowboarding. For those unable to walk independently there will be adaptive skiing.

Free for Yesodot member families who have paid the Annual Family Membership. Limited to 16 adaptive skiers. The adaptive ski center at Waterville Valley can accommodate skiers with physical, sensory, learning, developmental and other disabilities. Because Yesodot pays for Waterville Valley to hold these adaptive ski slots open for our families and reserving a slot means that someone else may have been turned away, there will be a non-refundable cancellation fee of $60/adaptive skier.

RSVP ASAP to director@yesodot.org. Yesodot families are responsible for complying with all rules established by Waterville Valley and all family members ski or snowboard ski at their own risk. Families must decide for themselves if they feel comfortable with adaptive skiing/snowboarding or non-adaptive skiing/snowboarding or other activities at Waterville Valley.

01/30 Magic Ark Performance: Junie B. Jones--Reserve your tickets now. The Box Office says that tickets are going fast!

1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Hooray! Hooray! Theatreworks/USA has a brand new musical that chronicles the adventures of the irrepressible Junie B. Jones. Based on the popular children's series by Barbara Parks, the play follows Junie B as she graduates from kindergarten and is ready for the first grade--at last! But getting used to a whole new group of friends, a teacher named Mr. Scary, and new glasses is scary, even for Junie B. Jones. Leventhal Sidman Jewish Community Center 333 Nahanton St., Newton.

Cost: For families who have already paid their annual Family Membership, $5/person in advance. For those who have not paid their annual Family Membership, $10/person in advance. Please RSVP by January 4 at the latest to director@yesodot.org and let us know that you have mailed your check to reserve your space at this event. Event fees are non-refundable. Yesodot's annual Family Membership is $36/family. Family scholarships based on need are available; e-mail director@yesodot.org for more information. Checks, made out to JVS-Yesodot, should be mailed to Yesodot c/o JVS, 29 Winter St., 3rd floor Boston, MA 02108. Yesodot families' attendance at Magic Ark performances is made possible through the generosity of Drs. Carolyn and Leonard Lilly.
